Last weekend was an extremely momentous occasion for me and for Poppy Loves Book Club, as I held the book club’s very first Captain Book Event!
For those of you that are wondering what a Captain Book is, it is the name given to the girl who heads up one of my book clubs… and there are now nearly 50 in several different countries around the world.
The Captain Book’s role is essential to the success of my book club – they help me bring women together, encourage wonderful conversation, gather communities in their home towns/villages, raise the profile of books and authors and also help generate business for independent book shops, which is something very important to me (shop local, gang).
They are shining beacons of bookish light and I am immensely proud of them all… so it was high time I threw a little shindig to let them all know how special they are.
It also meant that we could all meet each other for the first time!
There were many Captain Books who were unable to get down to Drink Shop Do in London, as the commute was just that bit too far…
But that didn’t stop them posting messages to us all from their corners of the world in the Poppy Loves Book Club Facebook group, including CBs in Queenstown, NZ, Kurdistan, Iraq, Italy, Germany and Australia…
We were lucky enough to be joined by a few authors, whose books we’ve read in the past, (Elizabeth Fremantle, James Benmore) the present (Tina Seskis) and will be reading in the future (Anoushka Beazley)…
There was cake (so much cake) there were bubbles, there was much fun and frivolity, a few tears (good ones!) and much laughter…
There were also goodie bags, packed with wonderful gifts from our supporters, which were so hugely appreciated by all of us…
Enormous thanks to Accessorize, Orion Books, Style by Portobello, Katie Leamon, Teapigs and Metcalfe’s Popcorn for the gorgeous treats and your support!
We all came out on a cakey high, full in the knowledge that we are all part of something extremely special, filled with pride for our growing community of wonderful women.. and enjoying the thrill of meeting new friends and kindred spirits…
Thank you to everyone who came, a huge warm welcome to all our new members… and if you are wondering what all the fuss is about, why not have a look over on www.poppylovesbookclub.com and join our Facebook group.
Do join us and tell your friends – we would love to have you!
